The 2015 Manhattan Beach Pumpkin Race was a Huge Success

November 9, 2015 lacarguy Manhattan Beach Pumpkin Races Tags: , , , , , ,

The 2015 Manhattan Beach pumpkin race was a huge success that brought together local families and businesses for a day of fun while helping to support local schools and the CHOICE program. Families got a chance to get out and participate in crafts or enter into the big pumpkin race against all the other participants for a chance to win the prized Championship Trophy.

What Goes on at the Pumpkin Race?

While the main event feautures a set medium-sized pumpkins turned race cars racing against one another for the top-prize trophy, there are arts and crafts, food and special events going on all along the Manhattan beach area for everyone involved. It’s a fun day to dress in costumes, get involved with the local community and show off your carefully crafted pumpkin car before you race it against all the competitors.

The event was organized back in 1990 and has been bringing thousands of participants together ever since. Mike Sullivan from LAcarGUY was the MC for the event and a also behind some of the donations supporting the event as well as many other local businesses in the area.

The CHOICE Program

The CHOICE program is a partnership with local businesses to help High School students involved with a special education program find local employment opportunities. Small businesses are encouraged to learn more about the program and how they can help these students get a start in their first career. By encouraging a more inclusive workplace environment companies can obtain loyal employees that are going to thrive in their positions. That’s the ultimate goal of the CHOICE program and it’s something that businesses all along the Manhattan Beach California area can become involved with. To learn how your business can be involved with the program and help out local students email Sonia Dickson at sdisksonbracks@mbusd.org for information about the program and how you can become involved.

Grades of Green Makes a Real Difference in Communities

October 30, 2015 lacarguy Grades of Green Tags: , , ,

Grades of Green focuses on empowering students to make a real difference in their communities and their environments. The latest story from the organization only goes to show how big of a difference local children can make. Max and Izzy, two Grades of Green Youth Corps students began working on their 100 Trees in HB project back in the fall of 2014. The project was a bold one with big aspirations and to date it’s almost nearly been accomplished.

grades of green trees

What is 100 Trees in HB

The idea behind 100 Trees in HB was to plant a total of 100 different trees throughout Hermosa Beach. Not only would the trees be planted throughout the project, but people would be educated about the value of trees along the way as well. Since started the project a total of 70 trees have already been planted thanks to two different events put together by Max and Izzy. First was an Earth Week tree planting that resulted in the planting of 30 trees and helped to educate a total of 175 students about the value of trees and how they help the environment. Next was the an event hosted by Max, another tree planting. This event resulted in 40 more trees being planted while further educating the community.

grades of green max

Not only have the efforts of Max and Izzy resulted in a total of 70 brand new trees improving the environment, but they’ve also helped educate hundreds of children and adults about the importance of trees to improve the environment. Imagine all the CO2 they’ve already helped pull out of the atmosphere,. It’s easy to see how big of a difference you can make with careful coordinated efforts.

If you would like to make a difference in your community, or you know a few students who you believe could make a real difference take a look at this link. The registration process is a simple one and it’s worth going through if you truly want to make a difference in your community.

A Recap of the 2015 EMA Awards

October 30, 2015 lacarguy Environmental Media Association Tags: , , , , , , ,

The EMA awards (sponsored by Toyota and Lexus) were a fun-filled spectacle that really gave Gwyneth Paltrow and a handful of other environmental champions a chance to shine for all their efforts to improve the environment. Paltrow received the 2015 Green Parent Award thanks to all her efforts to make corporations label all their GMO products as such. This is a major environmental issue and Gwyneth spent 2015 working toward getting the issue resolved. Lance Bass was the night’s host and he kept the tone light and fun, but also made sure that everyone understood just how important the environmental issues represented really are.

2015 EMA Awards

Environmental Cars

Both the Toyota Prius and the Toyota Mirai were recognized at the event. The Prius was a major spectacle at  the EMA awards because the vehicle’s been on the market for the last 15 years. The Mirai – Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell car – was on display for everyone to get acquainted with fuel cell technology a bit more and to see the stylish vehicle in person.

Mirai

Rescuing a Baby Elephant

Kristin Davis of Sex and the City was honored at the big event for her work with the EMA to bring back an orphaned baby elephant in Kenya. She helped rescue the creature that was a victim of poaching and she helped raise even more awareness for the ongoing issue in Kenya and other parts of the world with poaching.

Saving Elephant

Missions in Music

Don Henley received the Missions in Music Award during the event for his continued work to help preserve historic locations and the Walden Woods, home to Henry David Thoreau’s many writings and to the conservation movement overall.

Don Henley

Overall there was an excellent turnout to the event. Big names like Jessica Biel, Blythe Danner, Don Henley, and Gwyneth Paltrow were all in attendance to show their support for the environment.

Mike Sullivan of LAcarGUY was present to explain the Mirai and Toyota’s leading environmental technology and it was a good night for the environment overall.

Thank You for Participating in Coastal Cleanup Day!

September 25, 2015 lacarguy Green Team, Heal The Bay Tags: , , ,

LAcarGUY would like to thank everyone who made it out to the beach cleanup event on September 19th, it was truly an effective event. A total of 10,000 volunteers cam together from all around the Southern California area, and worked to help to clean up creeks, parks, rivers and local beaches.

Removed Massive Amounts of Trash

All the participants that worked with Heal the Bay during Coastal Cleanup Day managed to collect over 21,000 pounds of trash. That’s a massive step in the right direction and one way that the beaches, rivers and costs all over Southern California and the rest of the country are staying clean like they should be.

The In&Out Winners

Subaru Pacific managed to win the In&Out truck by having a total of 59 volunteers at the event all on their own. That’s a massive victory for the dealership and it goes to show what dedication can accomplish.

An Impressive Turnout around the Country

Last year, Coastal Cleanup Day had more than 600,000 participants and each one of you who made it to the event can say that you participated in what went on that day. It’s thought than an even larger number of volunteers joined in with this year’s event to make a stronger impact. It’s good to be part of such a positive movement, and to make a solid impact on cutting down pollution levels and beautifying the bodies of water all around the world.

Get Ready for the Biggest Volunteer Day Yet

September 16, 2015 lacarguy Community Involvement, Green Charity, Heal The Bay Tags: , , , , , ,

LAcarGUY is once again having its volunteer day in conjunction with Heal the Bay. Ocean pollution is a serious issue that’s affecting everyone along the Pacific coastline, and it’s something that local residents should be concerned about. As locals it’s up to use to tackle the problem head on, and that’s exactly what this volunteer day is all about!

It’s a day for LAcarGUY dealership employees to come together along with their family members to help make a difference on the nearby beaches. Every employee is encouraged to attend and to try and get together as many volunteers as they can to make the day into something special. September 19th is set to be the biggest volunteer day so far, and should have a major impact on the condition of Toes Beach.

When and Where

The day is set to occur on September 19th, 2015 at Toes Beach at Dockweiler at Playa Del Rey and it begins at 9AM. It makes for a fun outing with family members and friends and should leave everyone feeling good about what they accomplished.

The Perks

One lucky employee will have the chance to receive LA Laker tickets for two, and the only thing you have to do is show up and be prepared to work! The dealership that’s able to amass the most volunteers will also enjoy an In N Out Truck as a reward once they head back to work.

Finding a Parking Spot

Parking spots are available all along Pacific avenue. Both street parking and Del Rey Lagoon parking places are available and participants can feel free to use either one to get close enough for a comfortable walk to the location.

Gerard Has a Huge Impact on Lunchtime Waste at His School

August 5, 2015 lacarguy Grades of Green Tags: , , , , ,

This year Gerard, an 8th grader taking part in the Grades of Green Youth Corps Eco-Leadership program managed to cut lunchtime waste in his entire school by an average of 70%. While he had a bit of help along the way, it was all because of his careful planning and hard work that his school cut their trash creation so much, and that’s a trend that his school is going to continue on making a real difference in trash reduction over time.

gerard grades of green

Teaching How it’s Done

Most of us are used to packing a lunch that contains things like pre-packaged food and plastic sandwich bags and other wrappers. While that’s pretty standard, it’s actually quite wasteful. That’s why it’s so challenging to figure out how to begin bringing lunches that are trash free. Gerard set up a booth in school where he showed off reusable lunch pouches and also displayed the process of how to create them. With a simple demonstration he was able to give children the information they needed to start ditching trash nearly entirely at lunch time.

How He got Them Committed

Getting a school full of children committed to anything, especially something like recycling is always a bit of a challenge. Gerard came up with some excellent ideas to help encourage his student body to get involved with waste free lunches. Gerard opened a school store with fun prizes available to kids participating in important green actions like sorting their lunch after eating, or bringing in a trash free lunch. All the prizes were donated by local Long Beach municipalities and Grades of Green partners to help keep kids motivated.

Success!

All of Gerard’s efforts led to an average waste reduction of over 70%! That’s a huge figure that most people wouldn’t dream of being able to achieve. Through some smart planning and a lot of hard work one 8th grader was able to accomplish all this, and that’s why he’s a standout member of the Grades of Green Youth Corps Eco-Leadership Program.

Write Your Own Story

Gerard’s story is an impressive one, but you write one just as good for yourself! Apply for this year’s Youth Corps program here, or take the time to register your school here to begin Trash Free Tuesdays at your school and really start making a difference.

Help the Friends of Hollywood Central Park Win 25k and Kickoff the Park Project

July 3, 2015 lacarguy Hollywood Central Park Tags: , , , , ,

Each year Wells Fargo gives out a $25,000 prize to a business that wins the Wells Fargo Works for Small Business competition. In order to enter into this competition each of the businesses have to submit more information about what they’re trying to achieve and wait to be approved for the contest.

deck park advisors

The Friends of Hollywood Central Park made it through the first round and was chosen for consideration of the prize money. The organization is pushing their Deck Park Advisors business in this competition and if accepted will be able to start a successful business that will help fund the future park project.

Deck Park Advisors

The Deck Park Advisors business is dedicated to helping other cities and towns around the world figure out how to create more park space above existing freeways and roadways. The business will begin a consulting company and the money earned by their efforts will funnel into the Hollywood Central Park project. If the company gets the funding it needs to get off the ground, it could provide a good portion of the money needed to make the Hollywood Central Park possible

Helping them Win

While most of the score that each entrant receives will come from a panel of judges put in place by Wells Fargo, there is a public voting portion that will serve as a tie-breaker for the different entrants. To help make sure that the Deck Park Advisors have the best possible chance of succeeding it’s important that people visit the judging site here and vote for the project. You vote by pressing the “Vote For This” button, and each person is able to vote for the project once a day. If enough people vote for the project regularly the business will have a better chance of succeeding and could be just the thing that the Hollywood Central Park needs to get going for real.

Learn About the Winner

Wells Fargo won’t announce the winner of the contest until September. That’s when the company announces the finalists for the project as well as the Grand Prize winners. If you would like to see whether the contest develops into a big win for the Friends of Hollywood Central Park or not, keep an eye on the Wells Fargo website, as well as the Hollywood Central Park site for an update.

If you want to do something to help the project, visit this website and place a vote today and every other day that you remember to visit!
