If you thought the Guinness World Record for the longest drift of 51.3 miles set by a driver in a BMW was impressive, you’re about to be astounded by the latest record set while driving a Scion FR-S, also known as the Toyota GT86 in Turkey the country the record was set.
Over the course of 2 hours 25 minutes and 18 seconds Harald Muller skidded around his tiny .15 mile track for a total of 89.55 miles. In order to achieve this astounding record Muller had to squeal around the track for a total of 612 laps showing a true level of endurance and the reliability of a Scion FR-S. The record was set in Samsun Turkey on a course that was wet down by a significant amount of water to keep the tire traction low.
Smashing the Old BMW Record
The BMW record was set at the BMW Performance Driving School in South Carolina using an M5. To achieve their record a specialized skid pad was set up on the course in order to bring the record back to the USA. Now it seems that the record has left the states once again and it’s going to be a tough feat to beat.
Why the Scion FR-S?
The Scion FR-S is an obvious choice of vehicle to try to set the drifting record with for a number of reasons. First it is rear wheel drive and packs enough power to burnout without a problem. It is also a well-balanced vehicle and designed to be easily tune-able. Finally this car relies on a limited slip differential making it possible to get the car set exactly how you want it for effective drifting.
All of these useful elements came together and allowed Muller to set a new record that will probably hold for quite a while.
Sure drifting is still pretty new and there are bound to be more records set in the future, but drifting around a track for over two hours is impressive no matter how you look at it. In the video the Scion FR-S shows its true colors as a reliable and powerful vehicle, that just happens to be really good at drifting as well.
The Scion FRS Made an Impressive Show of Performance in the 2014 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
Ken Gushi, Toyota’s racer battled hard in the harrowing race up Pikes Peak, but he wasn’t able to repeat his first place finish that he achieved last year. Even though Gushi didn’t manage to snag the first place victory he still showed off what the FR-S is capable of and delivered a spectacular performance that leaves no doubt that he’s an excellent driver.
Pikes Peak is a 12.42 mile race up the slops of the Colorado Rocky Mountains that ends 14,115 feet up above sea level. Throughout the course of the race drivers have to deal with ever thinning air, whipping winds, and winding roads that you only find on difficult mountain courses. The entire race brings drivers around a total of 156 turns making it one of the most interesting and exciting races to watch.
Getting the FR-S Ready
At only the second time that the FR-S has been raced on Pikes Peak, a decent amount of preparation had to occur before it was ready to be raced up the steep slopes. In order to get the Scion FR-S ready for this harrowing race the suspension was completely retuned to handle the rough turns and bumps. A whole slew of new performance and safety gear was also installed in the vehicle to make this level of high-performance racing safe for the drivers. Finally the engine was enhanced to produce 500 HP and 480 lb.-ft. of torque giving it enough strength to fly up hills and keep up with the competition.
Why the FR-S Makes an Excellent Racecar
From its inception the Scion FR-S has been designed for racing and performance handling. It is built with a low center-of-gravity in mind and swings around corners accurately and adeptly. It’s characterized by its light agile steering quality and its low weight, both excellent qualities for winding courses like Pikes Peak where drivers have to turn at a moment’s notice.
Toyota was confident enough to put their 2013 FR-S up against a horde of other well-designed sports cars in one of the most challenging races of the year, and it performed quite well. Sure it didn’t land a top spot, but it certainly proved to all the viewers that the FR-S is an excellent driving car that can handle most conditions quite well.
With the release of the new Scion FR-S, the automaker is challenging the general public to prove just how epic they can make the Scion brand. The rules of the contest are simple, post a picture or video on one of the two approved social media sites and be selected to win.

The national consumer publication U.S. News & World Report named the 2014 Scion FR-S its “Best Sports Car for the Money” for the second year in a row. The judges evaluated 225 cars across 21 categories to name the winners.
The annual awards help consumers find a good value, while considering industry praise, high safety and reliability scores. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently tested the 2014 FR-S, giving it an overall five-star rating.
“The 2014 FR-S ‘Best Sports Car for the Money’ award from U.S. News and World Report underscores what our drivers have already discovered – thrilling performance doesn’t have to break the budget,” said Scion Vice President Doug Murtha. “The FR-S continues to bring together affordability, experience and safety in a way that excites drivers and the industry alike.”
Enthusiasts call the FR-S one of the best-handling sports cars on the market with its lightweight design and low center of gravity. The 2014 FR-S costs $24,700 MSRP with a six-speed manual transmission or $25,800 MSRP with a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and Dynamic Rev Management technology.
The Toyota Camry and Tacoma also earned spots on the U.S. News & World Report winner’s list. For more information on the awards and a full list of the 2014 winners, please visit http://usnews.com/cars-money.
The Automotive Science Group (ASG) analyzed thousands of social, environmental and economic data points and named Scion’s compact four-seater, the Scion iQ, to its 2014 Best All-Around Performance list.
The California-based (Santa Rosa) policy consulting group compared 97 mini-compact cars to determine its top five vehicles in this category. Factors included raw materials acquisition, human rights and labor laws where vehicles are assembled, environmental factors, purchase price, and finally, operating and fuel costs. The 2014 Toyota Yaris also made the awards list in the same category.
“More and more of today’s buyers consider a company’s values and operations important pieces of their purchase decisions,” said Scion Vice President Doug Murtha. “The iQ demonstrates Scion’s commitment to diverse, fun options that fit with our drivers’ lifestyles and priorities.”
This year’s ASG award marks back-to-back wins for the iQ. The world’s smallest four-seater at just 10 feet long, it achieves outstanding space efficiency and delivers an EPA-estimated 36 mpg rating in the city, 37 mpg on the highway and 37 mpg combined EPA rating. Dual VVT-i engine technology and a continuously variable transmission help maximize fuel efficiency and generate fewer emissions.

Scion presented four unique custom FR-S models to audience members of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, where the FR-S earned a repeat win as the event’s “Hottest Sport Compact” due to its mass appeal and seemingly limitless customization.
Scion was able to showcase this wide appeal by showing off FR-S models that ranged from a 750-horsepower drift machine by GReddy Performance, to an FR-S that relayed the dreams of famed DJ Steve Aoki.
While GReddy removed the stock 200-horsepower four-cylinder engine of their FR-S to shove a turbocharged 2JZ-GTE six-cylinder engine from the legendary Supra under the hood of their car, Aoki used his taste for music to throw a complete mix table and custom sound system into his FR-S.
In between these two extremes were the carbon fiber filled 500-horsepower Bulletproof FR-S Concept One and the Urban GT Sport Coupe; the latter of which features all-new front and rear bodywork that gives the FR-S a decidedly European look.
Though the reality of such a model is still up in the air, Toyota is re-introducing its Toyota FT-86 Open concept (i.e. Scion FR-S convertible) to the crowds of the Tokyo Motor Show.
Originally shown at this year’s Geneva Show, the FT-86 Open concept is abandoning its former white paintwork for a fresh coat of red. Toyota’s decision to continue to show and promote the FT-86 Open concept gives us hope that we may one day be able to drive a soft-top FR-S for ourselves.

Scion has been a strong supporter of the creative arts community for over a decade. During that time, Scion has worked with over 1700 artists from different backgrounds on different projects like record releases, art galleries, and the Scion AV initiative. In the latest collaboration, Scion has teamed up with famed DJ and producer, Steve Aoki to apply his creativity and personality to the Scion FR-S.
One of Steve Aoki’s priorities in designing the car was implementing an audio/visual system that would allow him to literally take his show on the road. As a result, a full mixing station was installed in the backseat that’s been paired with a completely redesigned speaker setup using components provided by Pioneer. New LEDs and strobe lighting fixtures were installed around and under the car, and to add to the nightclub feel, a fog machine was also added to the build.
The interior features custom graphics, wheels from FIVE:AD, an aero kit, and a shark fit antenna. The car was fitted with lowering springs, giving it a more aggressive stance, while GReddy provided both an intake and exhaust system to improve performance.
The completed Steve Aoki FR-S build will be making appearances at various Scion events throughout the year. For more details, check out the full spec sheet below:
