An Audi A6 2.0 TDI Ultra Diesel was used to set a world record recently by travelling through 14 different countries in Europe and covering a distance of 1,159.9 miles all on a single tank of fuel. This feat was made possible by a good blend of careful driving mechanics, a top quality vehicle and a very committed duo of drivers.
The two drivers that completed this mission were Rebecca Jackson, a TV presenter and racing driver, and Andrew Frankel an automotive journalist. Together this team travelled for 28 hours without stopping to rest. They traveled throughout this entire trip very carefully being sure to maintain hypermiling strategies throughout.
While driving they tried to keep the vehicle around 50 miles per hour as often as possible. This is the sweet spot for the car and trying to keep it at this constant speed level helps it achieve higher than expect fuel economy figures. By doing this the team was able to achieve a combined fuel economy figure of 63 MPG, that’s impressive for a vehicle rated at 55.8 MPG in US mileage. The event was all captured on social media and through videos and proved that the feat could be achieved.
Planning the Trip
In order to make this long-distance trip possible a route was mapped out to help the duo avoid most of the congested traffic and mountain roads that would make it nearly impossible to maintain the steady speeds needed for high fuel efficiency operation. After the trip was all planned out they filled up the tank and set off to set a new record. The car has just a 19.8 gallon tank and on less than 20 gallons of diesel the car traveled more than 1,100 miles which is pretty spectacular if you think about it.
Performance Not that Far from Expected Levels
Even though this performance was quite a bit higher than the mileage rating the car’s been given, it’s not that high to appear unattainable. With a vehicle that manages 55.8 MPG under standard driving conditions you could experience trips like the one posted about online under regular circumstances. That means with an A6 2.0 TDI you could save money while travelling regularly thanks to fuel savings. Unfortunately the vehicle is not available in the United States, and you would have to resort to a less fuel-efficient alternative, the A3 TDI. This smaller and lighter vehicle only manages around 43 MPG combined. That’s a noticeable drop from the newer A6 TDI.
Hopefully with the next upgrade to the A3 Audi is able to bring some of that technology to the vehicle and boost its fuel efficiency ratings further.
The Audi took home the 2014 World car of the Year title making it the second time the brand has earned the award since it was initially given out just ten years ago. Landing this prestigious award is no small feat and it speaks volumes about the quality that the new A3 has to offer. A large pool of judges ruled over the selection and had to consider a variety of different characteristics about each of the vehicles before coming up with a final decision. Audi is undoubtedly proud about the achievement, but it’s the consumers who should be paying attention because the winner of Car of the Year provides a high quality option and a real value when it comes to excellent vehicles.
Before the World Car of the Year award is given out an extensive amount of judging has to occur. There are 69 different judges who are responsible for sorting through the 24 top picks to decide on the one most deserving of the title, World Car of the Year. Each of these judges is a top level auto journalist and they come from 22 different countries in order to keep the competition fair. Out of the 24 possible options the Audi A3 was decided on.
The first year that the award came out the Audi A6 was crowned the car of the year, and now Audi is taking back the title yet again. The compact car managed to best the likes of BMW, VW, Lexus, Mazda and a whole host of other prestigious brands for the top honors.
The Audi A3 Qualities
A few of the judges remarked that the new A3 providers a smoother ride than ever, even approaching limousine quality. This compact car presents itself with a classy exterior while offering powerful and highly adjustable performance. While it doesn’t offer the highest level of performance versus cost on the specs sheet, in real-world driving conditions it is one of the smoothest and most enjoyable drivers out of the bunch. It comes packed with tech features that are normally only seen on top-level luxury vehicles, and Audi is even updating the system with brand new features that haven’t been seen on any of their vehicles yet, such as the 4G/LTE connection capability.
When the Audi A3 came out in 1996 it was a big deal because it created the luxury compact class. Since then it has added an array of different body styles and now comes in both gas and diesel engines. The A3 can be had in 3-door, sportback, cabriolet and sedan styles depending on what you prefer. Equipped with Audi Drive Select the driver can choose between Auto, Dynamic, Comfort and custom drive settings for a completely customized driving experience with altered steering and shifting qualities. This compact car packs a punch while offering luxurious performance and handling. Test drive one of these models and see exactly what everyone is so excited about.
Newest Audi TDI® models powering “Truth in 48” challenge to drive from L.A. to N.Y. in 48 hours on four tanks of clean diesel fuel
A team of 12 drivers will embark this weekend on “Truth in 48,” a bid to drive 2,800-plus miles from Audi Pacific to New York in 48 hours or less. The team will be driving the 2014 Audi A6 TDI and 2014 Audi A7 TDI sedans, with the 2014 Audi Q5 TDI as a support vehicle in the challenge to demonstrate the extended range and fuel economy provided by Audi clean diesel technology.
The rally, led by Wayne Gerdes of CleanMPG.com, will make only four refueling stops. They will depart from the Audi Pacific dealership in Torrance, CA the morning of the Saturday, Sept. 7, with plans to conclude the drive at the Audi Manhattan dealership the afternoon of Monday, Sept. 9.
Throughout the drive, the CleanMPG team will swap seats with members of the media, including Christian Moe of Road & Track, Damon Bell of Consumer Guide Automotive, Jill Ciminillo of Chicago Tribune and Sebastian Blanco of Autoblog Green.
Each Audi TDI clean diesel vehicle delivers up to 30% better fuel economy and 30% lower carbon dioxide emissions than gasoline engines, resulting in longer range and fewer trips to the fuel pump. By having more density than gasoline, diesel packs more energy in the same amount of fuel which helps maximize the miles per gallon. The 2014 Audi A6, A7 and Q5 TDI clean diesel engine vehicles adds to Audi’s list of advanced technologies that help enhance fuel efficiency, including Audi ultra® lightweight technology, Audi quattro and Audi e-tron.
Audi models equipped with the available Night Vision Assistant with pedestrian detection provide vehicle occupants and pedestrians with an added measure of safety and protection from the danger of a nighttime collision. The high-tech Night Vision system uses an infrared camera to monitor the area in front of your vehicle at night. The system can detect pedestrians that are between 50 and 300 feet in front of the vehicle. Warm areas appear lighter and cool images appear darker in the instrument cluster display.
The Night Vision Assistant is just one more technological advantage from Audi to help keep you, your passengers and pedestrians safer.
The engineers at Audi can proudly celebrate another accomplishment, as their supercharged 3.0L TFSI V6 engine made the cut for the prestigious Ward’s Auto 10 Best Engines list of 2012. This marks the third consecutive year that the engine has made the Ward’s 10 Best list. For 18 years, Ward’s Auto has been recognizing standout engines that are in the price range of most consumers, offer sufficient power, boast a great exhaust note, and integrates well with the vehicle the engine is featured in.
The supercharged V6 can be found in both the Audi A6 sedan and the striking A7 four-door coupe. Consumers can also find the award-winning engine in the Q7 full-sized SUV, and the athletic S4 and S5 models.
From a sheer power standpoint, the all-aluminum engine is good for a wholesome 310 horsepower and a substantial 325 lb-ft of torque, which peaks between 2,900 and 4,500 rpm. That’s nearly the kind of power found in a modern V8 engine, but because of its compact size, the TFSI supercharged 3.0L V6 is more efficient than an example with two more cylinders, and boasts a fuel economy rating of 19 mpg in the city 28 mpg on the highway (in the A6). And with Audi’s buttery Tiptronic transmission, you can listen to the engine’s fantastic exhaust note through eight smile-inducing gears.
The statistics are shocking. 38 million drivers on the road today would not pass their state or provincial driver’s exam, and across North America, drivers encounter 100,000 miles of crumbling highways and bridges. The U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood revealed earlier this year that a third of drivers under the age of 30 admitted to texting while driving. Audi has announced that the campaign for the 2012 Audi A6 centers on the mission to make the road a more intelligent place by calling attention to these issues and galvanizing enthusiasts to take action.
“The industry-leading technology in the all-new A6 is specifically engineered to analyze the road, anticipate situations for the driver, prepare for incidents and most importantly, enhance the driver’s experience, making the A6 one of the most intelligent cars on the road today,” said Scott Keogh, chief marketing officer of Audi of America. “The American road is a challenging place.”
In a related effort to raise awareness of today’s road conditions, Audi partnered with the SENSEable City Lab to develop the Road Frustration Index (RFI). Using a blend of historical and real-time data, the RFI features real-time snapshot of North American roads, taking into account traffic patterns, infrastructure quality, weather patterns, driver behavior (behaviour), social media comments about driving and more. The data is measured, weighted and compiled into an overall “index” for major cities throughout North America. Individuals will be able to find the RFI for their community and compare it to that of their friends. To view the RFI, go to www.roadintel.com.
The 2012 A6 is one of Audi’s most innovative and technologically-advanced models to date, making 2,000 decisions per second to assist the driver. Safety in the all-new Audi A6 is enhanced by a thermal imaging camera with Night Vision Assistant to highlight pedestrians it detects in front of the vehicle, as well as the Audi Pre-Sense Plus safety system that is able to minimize accidents by warning the driver and applying the brakes with increasing force in an emergency. Other intelligent features include heads-up display, which projects navigation data as a hologram that hovers over the windshield, allowing the driver to see important driving information in real time without having to divert attention from the road.
Audi is the first company worldwide to incorporate Google Earth into its MMI® Navigation system, which combines 3D terrain models with aerial views and a detailed street network to calculate routes seamlessly. The A6 also features a MMI touch pad that recognizes handwriting in multiple languages, allowing drivers to perform a number of functions without taking their eyes off the road, as well as factory-installed wireless internet, enabling features such as Audi connect™ for real-time weather, traffic, news and live fuel prices.
The Audi A6 boasts an all-aluminum Audi 3.0 TFSI® supercharged V6 engine with 310 horsepower. The aluminum-hybrid construction of the A6 drastically reduces the vehicle’s weight, improves handling and allows for less fuel consumption. Exclusive to Audi, the A6 also features Drive Select, a system that offers advanced control of the vehicle’s adaptive suspension, dynamic steering, transmission shift characteristics, and engine response. Audi Drive Select offers 27 distinct driving configurations, allowing drivers to configure vehicle drive characteristics exactly to their liking with their choice of Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, or Individual settings.
