With the help of over 11,000 volunteers, over 24,000 pounds of trash was collected at this year’s annual Clean the Beach Day that was held on September 21st. LAcarGUY is proud to sponsor the event which is put on by our partners at Heal the Bay. The event is the largest volunteer day on the planet and over 200 LAcarGUY team members joined in on the fun.
Volunteers cleaned over 32 miles of beach, inland waterways, regional parks, and city neighborhoods in 50 L.A. County locations. In total, over 24,000 pounds of trash was removed and that does not include the bulky items that have yet to be weighed and reported by the City of L.A.
LAcarGUY is proud to support this great effort every year to keep out beaches clean. This year we had the largest corporate group of volunteers on the day, and that speaks volumes to the love and dedication to the environment that everyone here at LAcarGUY has.
We thank everyone who came out to volunteer, and we hope to see you again next year.

The Toyota Prius Plug-in is designed to give variable results in fuel economy depending up on how it is used, thanks to its 11-mile EV Mode driving range. Use it to drive only short distances in between charges and the Prius Plug-in can regularly operate without any gasoline whatsoever. Drive longer distances between charges and it will perform closer to a standard Prius.
In an effort to gamify this disparity, Toyota this week announced the Prius MPG Challenge. Five waves of charitable organizations comprised of as many as eight groups at a time will be given Prius Plug-ins to drive for 30 days. Participants for the first wave of the challenge will be based in the New York Tri-State Area, and include the Greyston Foundation, Greater Mercer TMA, Bloomfield College, RYASAP, Glamourgals, and Helping Hands Food Pantry.
“By tapping regional organizations, we’re able to engage at a local level while demonstrating the Toyota Prius Plug-In‘s ability to improve the lives of our fellow community members,” said Toyota New York Region general manager David Christ in a press release.
Each group’s fuel usage will be recorded via the car’s on-board trip computer over the course of the month. The winning teams will receive $2,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third. Each car must travel at least 500 miles total, with a weekly minimum of 75 miles. Fans can monitor the progress of the challenge on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

LAcarGUY‘s Manager of the Environment, Alisha Auringer, and CIO, Tim James, had the opportunity to fill up their water bottles using the bottle-refilling dispensers! LAcarGUY was also presented with a sponsorship plaque from the wonderful team at Leadership Manhattan Beach.
Check out a few pics from the day! If you attended the event, tell us what you think of the new drinking fountains!

The locations of the new water stations are determined by the city’s Public Works Department for high use and visibility and can be found at the following locations: the Strand by the Pier, Polliwog Park, The Greenbelt, Marine Avenue basketball courts, and Manhattan Village soccer field. Future stations include the Strand by El Porto and Metlox Plaza. Manufactured by Most Dependable Fountains, Inc., the “H2.0 Station” is nearly 4-feet-8-inches tall and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Leadership Manhattan Beach has a mission to develop and unite community leaders by providing a flagship nine-month leadership training program that is held annually. 25 to 30 Manhattan Beach community members (adults and high school students) are selected to be part of the program to learn about various community services and programs. Individuals work collaboratively on a class project that brings immediate benefit to the City.

LAcarGUY’s group of South Bay dealerships have partnered with Grades of Green to kick off the 2013 Trash Free Lunch Challenge. Grades of Green is challenging schools to reduced lunchtime waste by encouraging students to pack trash-free lunches and to sort waste into recycle, compost and landfill bins. The 4R System that Grades of Green introduced helped divert over 10,000 bags of trash and saved participating schools thousands of dollars in 2011-2012.
The project teaches students the 4Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot (compost)
- By bringing TRASH FREE each day, the students will make a difference at school by REDUCING lunch time landfill waste. They will know the number of landfill bags produced at lunch before the Challenge and by being TRASH FREE during the Challenge, they will see that number decrease.
- By bringing REUSABLE lunch boxes, water bottles, sandwich and snack containers each day they will reduce lunch time waste.
- The school will implement a sorting system during lunch which will include bins for: RECYCLING, ROT (compost), liquids and stacked trays. Educational games will teach students about WHAT items go into each bin and WHY.
- Each bin in the sorting system will be clearly labeled to support students in the proper sorting process. These signs will educate and reinforce the concepts of REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE and ROT.
The Grades of Green team has been visiting participating schools and holding assemblies to educate students and get them excited about the project. Applications to participate in the project are due March 15th and finalist chosen among those schools with the least amount of trash will be announced March 22nd. Judges will visit the finalists on April 16th and the winning school will be announced on April 22nd at the awards ceremony.
Participating schools include:
- Vista Mar High School
- Washington Elementary
- Riviera Elementary
- Lunada Bay Elementary

Toyota Hollywood employees along with Helen Bernstein High School students began their Winter planting today with kale, brussel sprouts, beets, onions, carrots, turmeric and chives. The parent volunteers and students also did an amazing job with garden maintenance by pulling all those darn weeds and making it easier for us to plant today. Thank you! Just look at the photos – the garden is so alive!
In addition to their many responsibilities as students, the Garden Club has offered to donate the garden vegetables to needy families of Helen Bernstein HS.
The Toyota of Hollywood School Gardens Project continues to evolve! Please take a look at these recent pictures from the garden that Ms. Hairston from Helen Bernstein High School was kind enough to provide us.
We are excited see the garden in person next week at our event with EMA and Rachelle Lefevre from the Twilight movies!
As LAarGUY is a company committed to helping our community, Pacific Audi supports the Marine Toys For Tots Foundation to bring toys and smiles to children in need this past holiday season. Pacific Audi Appointment Coordinator, Ellizabeth Weissman, inspired us at Audi to participate in this program. She remembers growing up and receiving a lot of kindness and generosity in helping her family not just with toys but with food and clothing. She knows the huge difference it can make in a child’s holiday season. Pacific Audi is an official toy drop off center.
The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community.
