A race-bred Porsche is something of a work of art. It holds majesty whenever it hits the track. It does not need to show its resume – the many overall and class wins Porsche achieved in its decades of racing. It will only show its competitors its rear wing.
The new Porsche 911 GT2 RS is the latest edition in a long history of track-bred production cars.
Unlike any of our historic performance Porsches, we had to present it in a very different way. At the recent E3 conference here in L.A., where game consoles and games are presented – so was this high performance, race-bred version of the GT2 line. Microsoft helped Porsche bring it out – along with the upcoming Forza Motorsport 7 game.
Unlike a gaming console and its peripherals, the GT2 RS will have a real 3.8 liter horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine with twin turbochargers and rear wheel drive. There has not been any confirmation of gearbox, horsepower and performance figures but the number 700 keeps making the rumor mill!

Mike Sullivan has been racing since his teens getting his adrenaline fix on the backs of dirt bikes, but it wasn’t until 2014 that he decided to give Porsche racing a try. After all, they say that racing your brand is an excellent way to connect with it on another level, and that’s absolutely true according to Sullivan. He teamed up with Carl Tofflemire, the Porsche sales manager at LAcarGuy at the time, and they began racing vintage Porsches together.
The moment that Porsche came out with the Cayman GT4 Clubsport racer back in 2015, Sullivan snapped up two of them with a price tag of about $200,000 each. That’s when he decided they were going to take part in more serious races, they would enter the 2016 Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA series of races.
At the start of the series Sullivan decided to film the whole thing, and to his amazement the videos began getting some serious views. Within the first year of release his series had more than 180,000 views to his astonishment, and both drivers did better than expected with third place finishes in their categories.
It Just Made Sense to Create a Video Series
With nearly $20,000 going into each race, it only made sense for Sullivan to use all the racing footage to help promote his brand and bring more attention to Porsche South Bay. LAcarGUY has an in-house video department that’s responsible for creating videos and promoting them on social media, and the team worked hard to create the Behind the Wheel: GT4 Weekend Warriors series showing off everything that occurred during those 2016 races. The videos are all available at the porschesouthbay.com website.
The series had a production budget of about $50,000 with an additional $15,000 dedicated to social media marketing. The racing series was good business for the store though, and many of the racers featured in the video other than Sullivan and Tofflemire were actually customers that purchased their vehicles at the store as well. Nearly 10 vehicles were sold to racers in the series in 2015 and 2016.
Expanding the Store
Sullivan’s foray into more serious Porsche racing occurred at the same time that his old Porsche store was being improved upon with an all-new store in Hawthorne California. The $28 million construction is three times the size of the old store, and makes a real effort to show off the racing heritage of Porsche, with displays of some of Sullivan’s vintage race cars for customers to see upon entering the building.
Not only does the new store offer more space, more inventory and a richer presentation platform for the vehicles, but it’s right down the road from the Porsche Experience Center that promises to draw in interested buyers from all over the world.
Sullivan sees a real opportunity to expand his brand further with the racing and the release of the new store. He understands that it’s a chance to broaden his customer base and take things to a more national level. He wants to become the Porsche guy of more people around the country, and with more than 180,000 views on his racing series that seems like a strong possibility.
The recent Geneva Motor Show brought welcome news the Porsche faithful and enthusiasts, the “Drivers 911″ the 911 GT3 would once again be offered with a manual transmission!
In an ever increasing world of automation and complication, there comes a time and reason to unplug from it all and get back to basics, or at least as basic can get in this current day and age. When the 991 GT3 debuted it was hailed as the next great step, save for one thing, the lack of a manual transmission. The Porsche PDK is a superb transmission, and if the goal is to get around the race track in the quickest time, then there is no better tool to row through the gears. In the daily commute, stuck in traffic, the PDK also shines saving your left leg in stop and go traffic.
However, there are times when you want to row your own, to truly feel connected to the car and the driving experience, and for that, the best tool for the job is a manual transmission! If you wanted something close to the GT3 with a manual, you had to be lucky enough to get the 911R, but those were only offered to those who purchased the 918 Spyder, or, if you found one second hand, they started at $500,000 and went up quickly from there.
Porsche heard loud and clear that the faithful still wanted a manual gearbox and now they have responded. With the 991.2GT3 a six-speed manual returns attached to a 4.0 liter naturally-asperated flat six developing 500 horsepower and 339 lb/ft of torque. It wasn’t that long ago that 997 Turbo topped out at 450 horsepower, and now, the GT3 brings 500 naturally-asperated horsepower to the dance to sing that glorious song as it approaches it’s near 9,000 rpm redline.

It was a long hard road to get here, but it was worth it.
Not only does Porsche South Bay have a spectacular new home, we are now one of only four Porsche Classic Partner locations in the United States! To celebrate we held an open house, and over 700 people were in attendance for our 60’s themed party! We had an amazing display of classic Porsche’s including a few VERY special ones.
We had Jerry Seinfeld’s 901 Porsche on display, Mike Sullivan’s 918 Spyder and enough other classic Porsche’s to be the envy of any Cars & Coffee. Factory Porsche race driver Patrick Long was also in attendance with his personal 964.
We had great food and drinks, along with a DJ, and we gave away a bunch of prizes, including four vouchers for the Porsche Experience Center!

Pacific Porsche is now Porsche South Bay
Pacific Porsche is on the move, literally and figuratively! Did you know that Pacific Porsche has been part of the LAcarGUY family since 1999 and in our current location in Torrance since 2002? The short of it is, we have outgrown out current location. Since 2009 we have almost doubled the sales at Pacific Porsche and, with some coming announcements, we simply need more room to serve our clients!
As part of our move 8 miles up the road to Hawthorne, just off the 405, we will have 50,000 square feet of space for our showroom and service department. We are targeting the open date for the new location in early November.
To reflect our new location and the new reach we will have with the store, along with some very exciting announcements, we are rebranding Pacific Porsche to Porsche South Bay and the website address has changed as well to www.porschesouthbay.com as well.
We are very excited to show you what we are going to be doing with the store, it will have the latest in Porsche design and materials, in fact, we worked with Porsche North America and Porsche AG (i.e. the mother ship in Germany) in developing the look and feel of the new store.
We are going to have much more in the coming weeks about the store, the store design and everything that we are going to be able to offer you.
